We go down to the rug/mat for part two of my “Screw You, 2020” recovery series. It’s time to push, flip, rock, and roll! And by that I mean it’s time to get very intimate with a sweat-soaked tumble mat. But hey, it really ties the room together.
Adelaide increased the strain from session one, and boy howdy did I feel it. These exercises may look simple, but they really get the muscles aching. (Course, that may have something to do with my blatant inactivity over the past year, which is why we’re here.)
The day after session one was … interesting. I played competitive sports through college, played club sports in my 20s, and did 100-mile bike races in my 30s. I know what sore feels like. But in my 40s, and after a solid year of pro-level slacking, a renewed workout was a shock to the system. I woke up with a pain that I hadn’t felt in a long time. And you know what? It felt great, like I had actually accomplished something.
The fitness bug has bit me again and I’m all-in with the effort. And while I welcome the return of motivation, credit must be given where it’s due. I would not be posting this journey without the support of Adelaide and her Real Workouts for Real People channel. What I appreciate the most is her lack of arrogance. She’s not the “gotta want it” type who shouts empty platitudes between sets. This is her profession. She has a degree in physical therapy. She is invested in the well-being of her clients and has no interest in the quick-fix puffery. In fact, she actively rails against it (take this video for instance). This makes her an ideal companion for real people who want to focus on real health.
